While the University of Iowa cut off its swimming and diving program friday, starting with the 2020-2021 season, the questions surrounded the 2021 NCAA men’s swimming and diving championships that are scheduled to take up Iowa City in March, assuming there is still a winter sports season.
The resolve to bring the NCAA to Iowa was taken in the spring of 2017, but no one could have foreseen a global pandemic that held the season hostage or that the University of Iowa cut off its swimming team that has existed for more than a hundred years. Atlanta has been a widely used facility since the 1996 Olympics, as Georgia Tech hosted the NCAA in 2006 and 2016, and also hosted the US Open and USA Swimming Pro Series. The last time the men’s NCAAs were in Atlanta, four U.S. Open records fell in one night, and six other records fell in the last three days.
