British teenager Oliver Bearman will become the youngest Briton to compete in Formula 1 after receiving a late call-up from Ferrari for this weekend’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Ferrari’s 18-year-old reserve driver replaced Carlos Sainz, who suffers from appendicitis.

Bearman, who was born in Chelmsford in Jeddah, competed in the Formula 2 championship and had taken pole position for the main race in Thursday’s qualifying.

Verstappen is in excellent form and took pole for Saturday’s race.

Verstappen, a three-time world champion, didn’t need a second lap in the final standings as he beat Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0. 319 seconds.

Oliver Bearman finished a respectable 11th, 0. 53 minutes behind Leclerc in the second session.

Mercedes’ George Russell and Lewis Hamilton were seventh and eighth.

The Saudi race takes place on a Saturday to coincide with the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which begins on Sunday, March 10.

This date was originally scheduled for race day in Jeddah, so Formula 1 moved the grand prix forward by one day to avoid a collision.

Saturday’s race at 17:00 GMT.

Earlier this week, news emerged that Mohammed Ben Sulayem, chairman of motorsport’s governing body, the FIA, was being investigated for allegedly interfering with the effects of a Formula 1 race.

A whistleblower told the FIA that Ben Sulayem intervened to overturn a penalty imposed on Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso at the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

It is expected to take four to six weeks for the ethics committee to publish its report.

On Tuesday, the same whistleblower, Ben Sulayem, asked the government to certify the Las Vegas circuit for his race last year.

The whistleblower claims they were told “on the orders of the FIA president” to find a way to cross the circuit safely for racing.

There have been adjustments this week at Alpine after its disappointing start to the 2024 Formula 1 season.

Championship-winning engineer Bob Bell resigned from his advisory position, and technical director Matt Harman and head of aerodynamics Dirk de Beer resigned from their duties.

Bell is expected to join Aston Martin in an operational role, while Harman and De Beer will be replaced through a new design led by team leader Bruno Famin.

Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly qualified on the back row of the grid at the first race of the season in Bahrain and finished 18th respectively.
