Explosion in northern Iraq leaves two dead and three wounded

Two were killed and three wounded in an explosion in northern Iraq, Iraqi media said on Thursday.

The day before, they were traveling in an army vehicle in the Makhmour district when an explosive device went off, the Iraqi news firm reported.

No organization immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. It’s the latest in a series of similar incidents in recent days.

Eight other people were killed and three wounded Monday in an attack by gunmen in the village of Albu Bali, northwest of Fallujah, formerly controlled by the Islamic State group.

On Sunday, an explosive device exploded in northern Iraq, killing at least nine Iraqi federal policemen patrolling the village of Ali al-Sultan in the Riyadh district of Kirkuk province.

On Wednesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani convened an assembly of security officials to discuss the “terrorist attacks” and the army’s plans to respond to them, according to an official statement.

Iraqi declared victory over the Islamic State group five years ago, but the organization has continued to carry out sporadic attacks, amid fears of a resurgence.
