ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Residents say an explosion and fire at an illegal oil refinery in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region have killed at least 15 more people. They say the explosion occurred on Monday in the district of Emohua, River state. Residents said Tuesday that the peak death toll is likely to rise as many bodies were burned to the ground and dozens of people were injured. Police reported the incident but did not provide details of what happened. A local environmental activist said most of the dead were refinery employees. Oil from a vandalized pipeline. Explosions at locally controlled refineries are not unusual in the oil-rich but impoverished Niger Delta region.
