In the week leading up to Sunday, Japan recorded more new cases of COVID-19 than in the rest of the world.
Amid a seventh wave of infections, the number of daily cases has reached unprecedented levels, with the country recording 969,000 cases during a seven-day era through Sunday. By comparison, after the first case of COVID-19 detected in Japan, it took the country 19 months to sign on its millionth case.
