Romania and Bulgaria are “more than ready” to enroll in Schengen. These are the conclusions of the research project for both countries, organised through the European Comproject, which also included experts from Comproject and EU Member States. A spokesman for the European Committee said today that the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU will now take the factor forward.

The EC’s position since 2011 is that any of the countries has met all the requirements to be part of the Schengen area. The EP has also called in its resolutions for Bulgaria’s acceptance in order to take a position as soon as possible.

However, the resolution will have to be taken unanimously through the Member States, and the Netherlands has recently opposed the admission of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen. The Dutch parliament last week called on Prime Minister Mark Rutte not to take such a move at the European level. . The issue of Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia’s accession to Schengen will be discussed in early December, at the last Justice and Home Affairs Council under the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU.

“Since 2011, the European Comproject has been actively advocating for the final touch of the Schengen domain and the European Project considers that Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia have complied with all mandatory situations for membership. There was a voluntary research project for Romania and Bulgaria, which was organised and coordinated through the European Comproject with experts from Comproject but also from the Member States. The project showed that Romania and Bulgaria are “more than ready” to enroll in Schengen. The effects are overwhelming and no disturbances were recorded. He found that this may warrant further delay. All Member States declared the enormous progress made through Bulgaria and Romania in the strict implementation of the Schengen rules. From now on, the Czech Presidency will move quickly,” the EC spokeswoman said.
