Here’s everything you need to know about the first day of action of Phase 1 of the Europa League 2024:
Europe’s biggest esports derby will take place later in the 2024 Europa League, when Fnatic and G2 Esports face off in an official Rainbow Six Siege match for the first time in over 4 years.
The rivalry ratios between G2 Esports and Fnatic are comparable to those of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona in soccer. That’s why some esports enthusiasts call this clash the “Clasico” of esports.
Prior to today, the two organizations had met twice in Rainbow Six Siege:
Since then, a lot of water has flowed across the bridge. Fnatic went through a rebuild when the organization’s plans in Japan were shattered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, G2 Esports has noticed the retirements of Fabian “Fabian” Hällsten and Niclas “Pengu” Mouritzen and has noticed countless player moves.
Ironically, Aleksi “UUNO” Työppönnen and Jake “Virtue” Grannan are the only players who played in the February 2020 match and will also be available for today’s clash. But at the time, the Aussie was on Fnatic.
The clash is scheduled to kick off at 19:00 CET, as the two will face each other in the third match of the day.
Today will be the first time we will see the new WYLDE team, which has 3 new additions: Juhani “Kantoraketti” Toivonen, Leon “neLo” Pesić and Lorenzo “Lolfo” Masuccio.
They are the only team to offer a new assignment as new Team BDS recruits Fatih “Solotov” Turker and Josh “Tyrant” Pritchard will be making their debut in the French-speaking organization’s elite. This means that the former MNM player duo will play against Croatian IGL for the first time since the team parted ways with the marshmallows.
The BDS team and WYLDE will face each other in the last match on Monday. The two teams have already met 3 times, with the Yellows winning twice, adding up to a 2-1 victory in the last chance of qualifying for Stage 1 of the Europa League 2023.
Team ENCE will make its debut in the elite against Team Secret. Interestingly, the former Team Valor boys beat Team Secret twice in R6 South Breach before the more commonly French team won the off-season tournament.
However, Marlon “Twister” Mello’s team has changed slightly since then. The Brazilian coach brought in former Team Liquid analyst Marcelo “mcunha” Cunha and Adrian “Adrian” Tryka. In addition, Marc “Jume” Steinmann should remain on the European list.
Wolves Esports and Into the Breach will face off at the time of day. While the French are the favourites to win, the predominantly British side need to ruin Wolves’ start to the season.
The two organizations met once at Rainbow Six Siege, when Wolves Esports beat Into the Breach (1-2) in Stage 2 of the 2023 Europa League.
