ITALY: As part of a wide-ranging investment programme supported by EU funding, infrastructure manager RFI has awarded two road improvement contracts for a total amount of €633 million.
As part of a €374. 2 million contract announced on 31 October, a consortium consisting of Eteria Consorzio, Stabile, Scarl and Salcef will double the track on the nine-kilometre Genga – Serra San Quirico section of the 163-kilometre Orte – Falconara route.
The second track will be built on a new alignment, with six tunnels with a total length of 5 km as well as four bridges. There will be a new station in Genga near the Frasassi Cave Park.
The project is being financed from the European Union’s Recovery & Resilience Fund.
It is part of RFI’s €4. 4 billion programme to increase capacity and speed to 200 km/h on the Orte – Falconara line, which branches off from the main Rome – Florence line north of the capital and extends east to join the Adriatic Salon in west Ancona.
Under the agreement, a consortium consisting of Impresa Luigi Notari, Costruzioni Linee Ferroviarie, SIFEL, D’Adiutorio Costruzioni, Quadrio Gaetano Costruzioni and Costruzioni Edili Baraldini Quirino will be awarded a €259 million contract for the 8. 5 km Rho – Parabiago quadrivia of the Gallarate – Rho line northwest of Milan.
This includes the structure of a Y-shaped crossing south of Busto Arsizio station to allow trains to run from Malpensa Airport to Parabiago, keeping them on the main RFI network rather than employing the longer direction via Saronno, passing through Ferrovienord. in Nerviano and Parabiago station will be renovated and expanded.
Assignment Uses Recovery Investments
At the same time, RFI has launched a tender to complete the electrification of the 112 km Sibari – Crotone section of the Metaponto – Reggio Calabria line; Preparatory work has been ongoing since 2018. The €47 million allocation will be funded through the EU’s FRR programme.
Italian infrastructure manager RFI has introduced an accelerated program to equip the entire national grid with ETCS by 2036. ETCS’s National Assignment Administrator, Nazzareno Filippini, explains the idea behind this strategy.
Infrastructure manager RFI is embarking on a program to complete rail connections with the airports of Venice, Bergamo, Brindisi, Olbia and Alghero by the end of 2026, while a primary reconfiguration of the rail network around Milan Malpensa is also underway, reports Benjamin Zelki.
Up to €24. 7 billion has been allocated to rail investments under the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Fund, giving RFI the opportunity to drive a wide-ranging network improvement programme. However, the RRF investment has a strict deadline of 2026 to complete the allocation. Benjamin Zelki investigates the maximum elements of the planes.
