Authorities in European countries have a duty to ensure that all people are protected from violence and discrimination.
It is also vital that citizens in government respect citizens’ right to protest and express themselves peacefully and ensure that governments’ security responses to violence do not undermine those rights.
Violent incidents around the world in October included harassment and attacks on Jewish people, as well as defacements and attacks on Jewish sites.
Attacking Jewish communities with hatred, intimidation or violence in connection with the confrontation in the Middle East is unbearable and anti-Semitic. . . and unjustified. It came to a complete stop.
The Jewish people of the world will never be held responsible for the words and movements of the Israeli government or any other government.
This is not an isolated incident in Makhachkala, but a detail of the Russian culture of hatred towards other nations, widespread in Russia and propagated through state television, experts and authorities.
Russia’s foreign minister made a series of anti-Semitic remarks last year. The Russian president also resorted to anti-Semitic slurs. For the masterminds of Russian propaganda on state television, hateful rhetoric is commonplace. Even the recent escalation in the Middle East has provoked anti-Semitic statements by Russian ideologues.
Russian anti-Semitism and hatred of other nations are systemic and deeply entrenched. Hatred is the engine of aggression and terror. We will need to work together to tackle hate.
There is genuine concern within our Jewish communities around the world about the spread of anti-Semitism.
