TEGUCIGALPA – The European Union awarded Honduras 80 million euros ($93 million) in aid to help Central America’s poor fitness formula cope with the effect of the coronavirus pandemic, an EU official said Wednesday.
Despite strict measures to curb the pandemic, local hospitals have struggled to cope with the number of patients suffering from respiratory diseases in Honduras, which recorded 35,345 infections and 988 deaths from the virus.
“In Honduras, EUR 80 million will be earmarked in health, immediate recovery, economic recovery, employment and human rights measures,” Alessandro Palmero, EU representative in Honduras, told the press. Analysts expect the pandemic to cause the Honduran economy to contract from 2.9% to 3.9% this year and the loss of 500,000 jobs. About 62% of the population already live in poverty.
