BRUSSELS – The European Union needs to reposition its economy to be more independent of global powers such as Asia and the United States in the production of medicines and processors, European leaders Charles Michel said Tuesday.
Speaking at the Brussels Economic Forum, Michel said the strategic independence of the 27-nation bloc is a must-have of the EU’s plans for this century.
Our trade strategy will promote greater independence and ensure that we have all the mandatory resources to ensure the prosperity of our citizens. This includes, for example, greater autonomy in the production of processors, life-saving medicines and others – I have products,” Michel said.
France and other EU countries have expressed fear about the chains of origin of the European economy following the closure of the COVID pandemic in February from many production sites in China that manufacture 80% of raw tissues for active agents of certain medicines or parts for the automotive industry.
“European strategic autonomy is not just words. Europe’s strategic independence is our new non-unusual mission for this century. It’s in the most productive interest of all. European strategic autonomy is the number one purpose of our generation,” Michel said.
