(IN BRIEF) The European Spallation Source (ESS) and Alfa Laval are leading a groundbreaking initiative to connect recovered, fossil-free waste heat from ESS to Lund’s district heating network in Sweden. Alfa Laval will provide heat exchangers using emission-free steel from SSAB, further enhancing sustainability. This collaboration aligns with global efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, as highlighted by the IEA. By leveraging existing technologies and networks, this partnership exemplifies how cities can transition to more sustainable energy systems while addressing climate challenges. The project not only underscores the importance of reusing waste heat but also signifies a significant step towards Lund’s goal of becoming climate neutral by 2030.
(PRESS RELEASE) LUND, 12-Mar-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Recovered, fossil-free waste heat from the European Spallation Source (ESS) will be connected to the district heating network in Lund, Sweden – and Alfa Laval will supply heat exchangers using emission-free steel from SSAB to ensure the most energy efficient solution.
According to the IEA, district heating networks can play a crucial role in achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The expansion of these systems is projected to provide about 20 percent of global space heating needs in 2030, up from 15 percent in 2020. District heating and cooling is a sustainable system built on resource efficiency. By converting waste heat from industries energy can be reused to satisfy local heating and cooling demands. Sweden has one of the world’s most advanced systems for district heating and cooling, making it a front-runner in the field.
ESS will now connect to the district heating network and contribute to the district heating of southern Sweden with its fossil-free waste heat. Alfa Laval will supply heat exchangers to the system, adding Concept ZeroTM, the world’s first heat exchanger. manufactured with emission-free steel, SSAB ZeroTM, reinforcing sustainability at the center of the solution.
“This collaboration demonstrates how we, by joining forces, can use existing accessible technologies and networks to drive the energy transition and develop more sustainable cities” says Julien Gennetier, Vice President of the Energy Division at Alfa Laval.
“We are proud to be part of this initiative,” says Helmut Schober, CEO of ESS. “Acting towards sustainable progress is fully in line with the project of our facilities, where tissues and life sciences studies will contribute to addressing global challenges. “
“Several smart responses for the local electricity sector are very important elements of the global climate transition. We are pleased that ESS contributes to our district heating system. When Kraftringen’s high-efficiency district heating systems waste heat, the waste of energy is minimized. energy,” says Sezgin Kadir, CEO of Kraftringen Energi.
“The solution is an example of how the company can reuse waste heat in other processes, and is in line with our COP28 award-winning E. ON ectogrid™ heating and cooling solution,” says Carin Kuylenstierna, Chief Strategy Officer. and Sustainability at E. ON.
“What is happening now is unprecedented globally and is a step towards the city of Lund having an unbiased climate until 2030,” says Anders Almgren, Mayor and Chairman of the Lund City Executive Committee.
“To curb global warming, the world wants to reduce its CO2 emissions and find effective uses for energy. Partnerships and projects like these, where the entire price chain works together, aim to achieve climate goals,” says Thomas Hörnfeldt, Vice President Sustainability. Business at SSAB.
The strategic partnership not only highlights the importance of leveraging existing technologies, but also marks a step in the adventure towards more sustainable and effective cities on a global scale.
