ISTANBUL (Reuters) – President Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday that Turkey intends to maintain relations with Libya’s identified Government of National Agreement (GNA) worldwide after an assembly with the country’s prime minister, who plans to resign this month.
Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj signed a military cooperation agreement with Erdogan last year that reversed the GNA trend in a clash opposed to forces in eastern Libya of Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (ANL).
After an assembly between the men and their main deputies in Istanbul, the Presidency said that Turkey would continue to be “in complete solidarity” with the GNA, that it sought ties and was in a position to provide all kinds of support. .
Last month, Erdogan said Turkey was disappointed by his best friend Sarraj’s resolve to withdraw. Serraj’s government declared a ceasefire on 21 August in the conflict in the North African country.
The Ankara-Tripoli army agreement signed together with a maritime demarcation agreement that encouraged Turkey to boost hydrocarbon exploration in the eastern Mediterranean, leading to an ongoing confrontation with Greece and Cyprus over territorial rights.
