“Turkey stands with the Palestinian people,” says Islamist leader
Turkey will leverage its breakthrough with Israel to promote Palestinian rights regarding Jerusalem, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday.
Erdogan, Turkey’s Islamist leader, has a history of inflammatory anti-Israeli rhetoric that has had a negative impact on ties between the two countries; however, the last two years have seen abundant rapprochement between Ankara and Jerusalem.
Last month, close coordination between Turkish and Israeli security thwarted a series of planned attacks on Israeli tourists in Istanbul through Iranian terror cells.
Erdogan said Monday that “there is no excuse for the killing of children. Turkey stands with the Palestinian people. “
Israel on Saturday denied claims that its army launched the rocket that killed several children in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, and released footage that apparently shows the projectile was fired from a domain near the Palestinian enclave.
The incident amid a 56-hour escalation of hostilities between the Jewish state and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a Gaza-based terror group.
“Our sensitivity to the Palestinian factor and the importance Turkey attaches to the two-state solution are shared with Israelis at the highest level. We have emphasized the fact that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is a red line for Turkey,” Erdogan said. referring to a flash in the Old City of Jerusalem known to Jews as the Temple Mount.
