England could have a rematch with Jasprit Bumrah in Rajkot next week, with India contemplating resting him for the third Test.
Virat Kohli, meanwhile, is now not expected to play any part in the series, having initially sat out the first two matches for “personal reasons”. It is still unknown why the former captain is unavailable for selection.
India won the second game of the series thanks to Ollie Pope’s 196 and Tom Hartley’s seven fors in the final second. India bounced back with a win in the second match, set up through Yashasvi Jaiswal’s double century and complemented through Bumrah’s nine wickets in the match.
The hosts are expected to call up their team for the next two tests until the end of the week. Meanwhile, England are resting with their families in Abu Dhabi.

In the UK, TNT Sports (formerly BT Sport) is showing the series after reaching an agreement just nine days before the first ball was bowled. The matches are also available to view on discovery+. Commentary is being taken from the world feed, which features Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan.
While there was no studio presence for the first test, for the rest of the series, TNT Sports flew Alastair Cook and Steven Finn to Sweden to get up early and secure an on-screen presence. The host of the studio is Kate Mason.
Live radio policy is on Talksport 2, not the BBC Test Match Special. Although the BBC made an offer for the rights, it outbid it through the advertising channel. Talksport will broadcast the next leg of the UK excursion to India basically from London with a reduced team on site special in Rajkot and Ranchi.
England’s 16-man squad has a mix of young people and experience. Veterans like Joe Root and James Anderson are joined by rookies like Shoaib Bashir and Tom Hartley, the latter of whom took nine wickets in the opener. Harry Brook was allowed to return to the UK even before the first test began, raising non-public reasons. He may be available for a change later in the tour, but he was replaced on the team by Dan Lawrence.
