England beat an energetic Argentina 26-23 at the Stade de France to take third place at the Rugby World Cup, a measure of consolation after the sadness of their narrow semi-final defeat last week.
Owen Farrell’s boot made the difference as both teams scored two attempts each, but the England captain was always accurate in scoring four goals and two conversions, for a total of 16 points, to ensure his team won a largely unnecessary campaign.
England looked to end the sadness of their 16-15 loss to South Africa in last Saturday’s semifinal in Paris when they took a 13-point lead and led 16-10 in stoppage time, but allowed Argentina to close the gap. three-pointers in a time plagued by errors.
It was England’s first time winning the bronze medal at the World Cup after winning the 2003 tournament and completing second place three other times.
