Emma Raducanu withdrew from the Transylvanian Open next week in Romania with a wrist injury that could spell the end of her season.

The British number one, with a Romanian father, won her first WTA Tour matches in Cluj-Napoca last year, reaching the quarter-finals.

British Billie Jean King Cup captain Anne Keothavong will fold her hands to make Raducanu available for finals week in Glasgow early next month.

Keothavong is due to announce his line-up for the 12-nation round at the Emirates Arena on Monday, but Raducanu and his team will possibly think it will be more advantageous for him to draw a line in a difficult season and focus on 2023.

This is Raducanu’s latest injury since winning the US Open to raise blisters, back and muscle ailments, plus an episode of Covid-19 that disrupted his pre-season training.

After taking flight in his semi-final at the Korea Open a fortnight ago due to a gluteal injury, Raducanu played in Ostrava this week and lost his first-round encounter with Daria Kasatkina on Tuesday.

The news also deals a blow to Raducanu’s hopes of slipping back to the sensible 50 of his current rating of 67.
