A devastating bus accident marred Easter festivities in South Africa when a bus carrying worshipers en route to an Easter festival veered off a bridge over a mountain pass and burst into flames on Thursday.
Authorities showed the heartbreaking news of at least forty-five dead, with the only survivor being an 8-year-old boy who was seriously injured.
According to the government of the northern province of Limpopo, the tragic incident occurred when the bus left the Mmamatlakala bridge and plunged a staggering 50 meters (164 feet) into a ravine before being ravaged by flames.
Despite ongoing search operations, the government revealed that many of the bodies were charred beyond their popularity and remained trapped in the vehicle.
Initial reports recommend that the bus head from neighboring Botswana to the city of Moria, famous for hosting a popular Easter pilgrimage.
It is believed that the driver lost the vehicle, leading to a tragic accident, in which the driver was among the victims.
Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, who was in Limpopo province for a road protection campaign, replaced her plans to stop at the crash site, according to the Ministry of National Transport.
Minister Chikunga offered her condolences to the families of those affected and expressed confidence that an investigation is being carried out into the causes of the turn of fate.
The South African government issues road safety warnings during the Easter holidays, acknowledging the increased dangers associated with increased road trips. Last year alone, more than two hundred road injury deaths were recorded over the Easter weekend.
The tragedy spread amid preparations for the annual Easter pilgrimage to Moria, organized by the Christian Zionist Church, which draws thousands of worshippers from across South Africa and neighboring countries.
