CAIRO (AP) — An Egyptian policeman opened fire on Israeli tourists in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, killing at least two Israelis and an Egyptian, according to Egypt’s Interior Ministry.

The Extra News TV channel, which has close ties to Egyptian security agencies, quoted an unnamed security official as saying another user was wounded in the attack, which took place at the site of Pompey’s Column in Alexandria.

The alleged culprit arrested.

Security forces temporarily cordoned off the site of the attack. An amateur video circulated on social media showed at least three ambulances transporting those affected to hospitals, as onlookers looked behind a police barrier.

Israel’s Zaka rescue service said two other people died in Alexandria.

Sunday’s attack came as Israel was battling Palestinian militants after a first incursion from Gaza.

Egypt made peace with Israel decades ago and has long served as a mediator in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But anti-Israel sentiment is all too common in the country, especially episodes of violence.
