Egypt welcomes peace agreement between Ethiopian movement and Tigray

In a press release, Abu-Zeid hoped that the agreement would bring permanent peace to Ethiopia and give the Ethiopian government and others a chance to remove the effect of the standoff and rebuild social stability.

He affirmed the importance of strengthening peace, stability and security in Africa, in East Africa.

Abu-Zeid expressed Egypt’s thanks and appreciation to the African Union (AU) High Representative for the Horn of Africa, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, members of the AU High-Level Panel for the Ethiopian Peace Process and members of the Wise Panel for their efforts to help warring parties achieve this agreement.

He also thanked the South African president and the South African government for the talks on the agreement.

On Wednesday, the Ethiopian government and the Tigray Movement announced that they had reached a truce, negotiated through the AU, following a series of talks in South Africa led by the AU’s special envoy, former President Obasanjo. The deal comes after a two-year civil war that has a humanitarian crisis.
