QUITO — Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso on Tuesday accepted the resignation of 3 government ministers, Economy and Finance Minister Simon Cueva and Health Minister Ximena Garzon, the government said in a statement.
The third official to resign is Transport Minister Marcelo Cabrera. Lasso thanked the former ministers for their “loyal and valuable service,” he said, adding that replacements will be appointed at 17:00 local time (22:00 GMT) today.
The imminent departure of Ecuador’s Secretary of the Civil Service, Iván Correa Cueva, in an interview with local television channel Teleamazonas on Monday, added that other adjustments will also come.
The resignations come after more than two weeks of protests rocked Ecuador, killing at least 8 other people and severely affecting the country’s oil industry, its main source of income.
The government nevertheless reached an agreement to end the protests that ended last week with indigenous leaders, who had demanded fuel subsidies and an end to the expansion of the oil and mining industries.
Adjustments were needed in the cabinet, Correa added.
Later on Monday, Reuters published a letter detailing Garzon’s resignation, thanking Lasso for the opportunity to serve as fitness minister.
Lasso also accepted the resignation of Ecuador’s Secretary of Higher Education, Science, Generation and Innovation, Alejandro Ribadeneira, the government said.
