QUITO – Ecuador’s National Assembly voted Tuesday night to remove its head, Guadalupe Llori, a close friend of President Guillermo Lasso, accusing him of having fulfilled his purposes and appointing one of his deputies in his place.
The motion was supported by 81 of the 82 lawmakers and supported by the opposition, which holds the majority in the assembly of 137 lawmakers.
The resolution will most likely deal an additional blow to Lasso, who has faced vehement opposition at the meeting to his investment and security proposals, and the president threatens to circumvent the legislature with decrees and other equipment at his disposal.
In addition to opposition from lawmakers, Lasso’s presidency has been plagued by high degrees of violence and bloody criminal riots that have killed many inmates.
Several political parties have sought to overthrow Llori, a member of the indigenous Pachakutik, in recent weeks, arguing that he blocked calls against his leadership and did not convene existing legislative sessions.
Llori had asked the judiciary for protective measures to be overthrown, but the judges postponed the ruling to lawmakers.
Llori did not attend the hearing to exercise her right to a defence. His dismissal as head of the board does not detract from his prestige as a member.

Independent deputy Virgilio Saquicela, who served as the organization’s vice president, declared the new leader through lawmakers.
Saquicela invites Lasso to “seek answers to insecurity, seek legislation that will take advantage of the country, (and) sit down with all sectors to locate tactics to solve Ecuador’s serious problems,” the meeting said Tuesday afternoon.
