Quito: Thirteen inmates were killed and two others injured Monday in a bloody fight in an infamous Ecuadorian prison, law enforcement officials said.
“Unfortunately the Central Command reports thirteen (inmates) dead and two injured,” the South American criminal authority SNAI said on Twitter.
The incident occurred in the same prison of Bellavista, in the town of Santo Domingo de los Colorados, about 80 kilometers from Quito, where 44 inmates died in a bloody brawl in May.
Prison officials, aided by the army and police, were able to recover the facilities, SNAI said.
Some 220 prisoners escaped the May riot, but most of them were recaptured.
Vicious criminal unrest is not unusual among Ecuadorian criminals, where drug gangs compete for trafficking routes.
These rivalries rarely erupt in bars of macabre violence, with some detainees massacred or beheaded with machetes.
