Ecuador’s position at the World Cup was shown after the Court of Arbitration for Sport issued its verdict on allegations across Chile and Peru that Byron Castillo was ineligible to participate in the qualifying rounds.

However, while ruling that Castillo’s passport was genuine, CAS said it contained falsified data, namely his position and date of birth, as he was born in Tumaco, Colombia.

As a result, the tribunal imposed a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs (£87,600) and a deduction of 3 issues before the next World Cup qualification for relying on a false document.

“The formation considered it mandatory to find the FEF guilty of an act of forgery under Article 21, paragraph 2 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, even if the FEF was not the author of the forged document but only the user,” it said.
