An earthquake with an initial magnitude of 5. 7 shook the Ecuadorian coast on Thursday, killing a user when a teenager was electrocuted through a fallen line of force, the government said.
The U. S. Geological Survey said the quake had an intensity of about 80 kilometers (49 miles) and was centered about 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of the port of Guayaquil.
Ecuador’s Geophysical Institute said the tremor was felt at the country’s highest, “weakly” in the mountains.
Jorge Vera, mayor of the Simon Bolivar municipality in the coastal province of Guayas, said a 16-year-old boy died. He said a high-voltage cable fell while the victim was practicing “a sporting activity,” but did not elaborate. .
