The United States does not expect the Netherlands to definitively adopt its strategy for China’s export restrictions, a senior Dutch official has warned, signaling a possible impediment to the Biden administration’s trade fight.
“The Netherlands will copy the American measures one by one,” Dutch Foreign Trade Minister Liesje Schreinemacher said in an interview with NRC newspaper published Friday. “We are doing our own assessment, and we are doing it in consultation with spouse countries like Japan and the United States. “
The comments marked the first time the Dutch publicly stated their position on the issue. Biden’s administration is pushing for a multilateral agreement to impose restrictions on China, aimed at moving complex chip technologies away from the country and its military.
