Dutch City Loses Case to Twitter Over Conspiracy Theory

A Dutch court has rejected claims by a city that Twitter did enough to remove posts related to an unfounded satanic pedophilia conspiracy theory.

The Amsterdam District Court ruled that Twitter had done enough to remove content surrounding the conspiracy theory about the town of Bodegraven-Reeuwijk from its site, saying the company had to respond to a request from the city to remove certain posts.

The conspiracy theory, which began circulating on social media in 2020, alleges that satanic pedophiles abused young people in the city in the 1980s. The city has denied the allegations and conspiracy theorists provide no evidence for their claims.

Bodegraven-Reeuwijk, a city of 35,000, sued social media last month, not easy for it to remove all content related to the conspiracy theory.

Stories of conspiracy theories reportedly led other people to the city and to the graves of dead youths to lay flowers and write notes.

The men accused of launching the conspiracy theory are recently detained for incitement and death threats against public officials, according to Reuters.
