Drought exposes dozens of Nazi ships sunk on the Danube

Dozens of German warships sunk in World War II have resurfaced on the Danube River in eastern Serbia amid Europe’s worst drought in years, according to a report released Friday.

News firm Reuters reported that the Danube is at its lowest point in nearly a century. water grades are low.

More than 20 ships, still containing ammunition and explosives, were displayed along a stretch of the river near the Serbian port city of Prahovo, Reuters reported.

Boats loaded with explosives pose a danger to shipping lanes and the fishing industry in Serbia and Romania.

According to Reuters, some of the exposed vessels narrowed the navigable segment of the river near Prahovo by 180 to 100 meters (590 to 330 feet).

“The German flotilla has left a wonderful ecological crisis that threatens us, the other people of Prahovo,” Velimir Trajilovic, 74, a local who wrote an e-book about the ships, told Reuters.
