MANILA, Philippines – Senate minority leader Franklin Drilon says the government’s working group on coronavirus (COVID-19) has failed over the country’s current fitness crisis.
“Look where we are today. 70,000 cases, expanding every day. The prediction is that until the end of the month it will be more than 80,000,” he added.
“The fitness sector of the IATF (Interagency Interagency Working Group on Emerging Infectious Diseases), let’s call things by name, Secretary Duke now lacks the credibility to send others to do things,” he said.
“It influences decisions,” he added.
Drilon one of 14 senators who signed a solution last April calling for Duke’s “immediate” resignation for his alleged “failure of leadership, forgetfulness and () lack of foresight” in the fight opposed to the coronavirus pandemic.
“The consultation of being in the cabinet, the consultation of being in the IATF is a matter of accepting as true in the president’s component,” Drilon continued.
“We can shout to heaven” Change Duke “as the Senate did, but the President’s confidence, for some explanation of why we know, has maintained confidence in Duke,” he added.
The Health Secretary has already criticized for making “alarming” comments on COVID-19 in the Philippines.
“I don’t see any economic equipment in the IATF deliberations, it’s somewhere in the background,” he said.
“But given the effect of the pandemic on our economy, they are at the forefront of our fitness sector, because that’s our challenge today,” he added.
The President should lay out a comprehensive COVID-19 plan on how the government would lead the country in its path to recovery when he delivers his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) next week, the Senate minority leader said.
“This upcoming SONA is one of the top addresses of the state of the country that other people would witness. For the first time in our history, we faced a pandemic,” he added.
“This is the scenario we face today, so I’d like to hear the president provide a comprehensive plan that other people would seek and guide ourselves to join the legislature,” he added.
As of July 21, the Philippines had recorded 70,764 cases of coronavirus, 23,281 cures and 1,837 deaths.
