Dramatic decline in retail in South Africa in June

(RTTNews) – South Africa’s retail sales fell for the third month straight in June, but at a more moderate pace, South Africa’s statistics knowledge showed Wednesday.

Retail fell 7.5% year-on-year in June, following an 11.9% drop in May.

The Covid-19 pandemic and lockout restrictions since 27 March have had a significant effect on economic activity, the firm said.

The greatest negative contribution came here from all the “other” shops, food, beverage and tobacco stores in specialty outlets and textile, apparel, footwear and leather goods stores.

On a monthly basis, retail sales rose to 6.4% in June, following an expansion of 68.7% last month.

In the 3 months ended June, retail sales decreased by 23.5%, following a 20% decline in the last 3 months.
