The companies expected to participate are Claro, the Latin American telecommunications giant; the electric power company EGE Haina; IMCA, a heavy equipment company and the government’s national fitness insurance agency.

Currently companies in the Dominican Republic generally allocate 8 hours of work per week and some other 4 hours on Saturdays, they are free to allocate the hours as they see fit, as long as they are not more than 44 hours per week.

The Dominican Republic is following in the footsteps of Britain, which introduced what is considered the world’s largest test of a four-day workweek and achieved positive effects last year.

A growing number of U.S. companies also have switched to a shorter workweek, while in Chile, legislators approved a bill last year to reduce the work week from 45 to 40 hours.
