The new President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader Corona, has announced the formation of a “tourist recovery plan” for the top popular destination in the Caribbean.
Abinader himself will lead the plan, which aims to “health, well-be and protect tourists and promote a sustainable recovery of the tourism sector,” according to a government statement.
“Our purpose is to minimize the effects of the pandemic and facilitate a recovery that prioritizes health, maximizes the prospect of job creation and economic growth, and promotes the sustainable progression of the sector,” Abinader said.
The plan is highlighted through a new initiative to be presented in September and will conduct immediate COVID-19 tests on “randomly determined travellers” upon arrival.
Once this is in place, the country will require negative COVID-19 control prior to arrival.
Until then, the country will continue to require all travellers to submit a negative COVID-19 check within five days of arrival in the Dominican Republic.
The country will also require social estrangement and mask for a visitor’s stay.
All tourists visiting a hotel will receive a transitional assistance plan that will include a policy for emergencies, telemedicine, accommodation for long remains and flight replacement rates in case of infection, provided the guest fare is lower until December 2020.
Abinader also said the country would create a “health bubble” for hotel workers to stay in the hotel for as long as possible.
The plan will be controlled through a new tourism company led by the new Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, David Collado.
“We are running to drive the continued expansion of the sector as well as the symbol of our country,” Minister Collado said. “We are confident that, combined, we will succeed over the demanding situations of the pandemic and that the Dominican Republic remains the most sensitive destination in the region for foreign travelers, whether for holidays, business, investment opportunities or to return to their favorite homes. . “
