THEY are beings of myths, legends, and indeed of many stories.
But did giants roam the Earth in the past, and if so, was it part of your playground here in Almeria?
For a long time there have been many Andalusian stories about the mythology of the Atlanteans and the Titans, giant races that are said to have inhabited and shaped this Latin land in the past. Part of the landscape that contributes to those stories are the domain’s megalithic formations that can be discovered in many places.
One such place is located on the beach near Cabo de Gata, with its megalithic rock formations jutting out spectacularly from the sea. Legend has it that those gigantic chunks of stone were once used as firearms in a fierce war between two livid giants, who broke off chunks of mountain and threw them at others in a fit of rage.
Another site that would echo the ancient cries of the giants are the fortresses and megalithic necropolis of Los Millares, located in the municipality of Santa Fe de Mondújar. This site features huge tombs or “dolmens” identified as burial sites, but far larger than any recorded human in history. The entire site is huge and local legends tell of a giant who was chased and killed, after which his body was turned to stone. This stone frame was then used to create walls and structures, some of which still exist today.
Whether it’s a forgotten and forbidden history, or simply the creation of myths, one thing is for sure: Almeria is a region of beauty, history and captivating legends.
