Destatis: Employment in Germany rises in November 2023 and reaches a new high

(IN BRIEF) In November 2023, approximately 46.1 million persons residing in Germany were employed, marking a slight increase in employment. According to provisional calculations from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the seasonally adjusted number of persons in employment rose by 19,000 (0.0%) compared to the previous month, following a similar increase in October 2023. However, when not seasonally adjusted, employment in November 2023 increased by 38,000 (0.1%) compared to October 2023, reaching a new all-time high. Compared to November 2022, the number of persons in employment increased by 0.4%, or 206,000 individuals.

A similar increase was recorded in October 2023, when the number of other people hired increased to 18,000 month-on-month, after 3 consecutive declines. Overall, however, the seasonally adjusted employment point has declined by another 2,000 people since June 2023.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the number of people hired in November 2023 increased to 38,000 (-0. 1%) compared to October 2023. This monthly increase is lower than in November 2022 (41,000 more people). However, this increase means that the number of other employed people also reached a new all-time high in November 2023, after surpassing the 46 million mark for the first time in October.

A slower year-over-year upward trend

Compared to November 2022, the number of people employed in November 2023 increased by 0. 4%, or 206,000. The one-year update rate amounted to 0. 5% in September and October 2023, following 1. 0% at the beginning of the year. Compared to last year, the long-term uptrend in the hard work market continued at a slower pace.

Adjusted unemployment rate at 3.1% in November 2023

According to the Labour Force Survey effects, 1. 35 million people were unemployed in November 2023, representing an increase of 27,000, or 2. 1%, as of November 2022. Compared to the same month last year, the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3. 0%.

Adjusted for seasonal and abnormal effects, the number of unemployed stood at 1. 36 million in November 2023, an increase of 5,000 compared to October 2023. Compared to last month, the adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3. 1%.
