“The concept that other people from other racial or ethnic teams are more successful or intellectually amazing because of a predisposed genetic makeup is totally incompatible with the consensus of clinical and medical scholarship,” Ruiz said.
“These prospects are damaging and have no standing in a hearing examining the origin of a pandemic that has disproportionately and massively harmed communities of color in the United States,” he continued, saying that by giving Wade a platform, Republicans were damaging the audience’s credibility.
At the end of Ruiz’s opening statement, the subcommittee’s chairman, Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, reminded the common member that Republicans had announced their witness list last week and noted that Ruiz had waited until Wednesday morning to announce his objection.

“I think I will shortly be trying to respond to rank member Ruiz’s attempt to discredit my testimony by saying a series of false things about the book I wrote 10 years ago on race biology. It was a decidedly non-racist book,” Wade said.
“It doesn’t have any clinical errors, as far as I know. It has no racist statements and emphasizes the theme of unity that we are all diversified in the same human genome. My eBook has been vigorously attacked by obscurantist scholars who need everyone for there to be any biological basis for race. And my eBook was as welcome to them as photographs of the Earth from the area to the flat earths,” he continued.

Wade is a former science editor for The New York Times who also worked for Science and Nature magazines. In May 2021, he wrote a 10,000-word article on Medium titled “The Origin of COVID: Did People or Nature Open Pandora’s Box in Wuhan?”in which he questioned the origins of the coronavirus, presenting evidence suggesting he may have fled the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Wade’s paper sparked intense debate within the clinical network because it challenged the more widespread clinical view that the virus has herbal origins.

Although first derided as a conspiracy theory, lab leak speculation about the origins of COVID-19 has gained credibility as speculation of herbal origins has not been conclusively proven. FBI Director Christopher Wray told Fox News that the COVID-19 pandemic was most likely caused by a lab leak in Wuhan following a similar investigation through the Department of Energy.
