SINGAPORE: The average number of COVID-19 cases on the network over a seven-day period rose from about 2600 a week ago to nearly double to 4400 on Thursday, October 6, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said.
Hospitalized cases of COVID-19 also rose from 247 a week ago to 342, and those in the intensive care unit (ICU) went from nine to thirteen in the same period, the Health Ministry added in a press release Friday.
“This is probably due to increased social activities, the removal of MMS, as well as the subvariants BA. 2. 75 and BA. 2. 10 Omicron, which have been detected internationally and are now circulating in Singapore,” the fitness ministry said.
So far, there is no evidence that subvariants have led to more severe disease, he added.
The surge in cases is not unforeseen as Singapore continues to open up its economy and society, the fitness ministry said.
