BUENOS AIRES, Aug. 26 (Reuters) – Argentina on Wednesday recorded a record accumulation of 10,550 COVID-19 cases, the Fitness Ministry said, bringing the total number of cases to 370,188 as the southern United States is suffering from slowing the spread of infections while seeking help to open up its crisis-hit economy.
The grain producer, which imposed a strict lockdown in March that first helped curb the spread of the virus, is now catching up with other heavily affected countries in the region, adding to its neighbor Chile, where new infections are have slowed down.
Latin America has the epicenter of the global pandemic, with the highest number of infections and deaths, as the region’s economy will sink sharply this year, pushing millions into poverty.
The evening’s report showed there were 276 new COVID-19 deaths in the 24 hours since the previous day’s count, bringing the total to 7,839.
The government of center-left President Alberto Fernández ended confinement restrictions in and around the capital Buenos Aires until the end of August. The region has the number of infections.
