Dhaka: At least 18 other people died in Bangladesh when Cyclone Sitrang hit the country’s coast and weakened to a tropical depression in the early hours of Tuesday, the Dhaka Tribune reported.
Shorelines were battered by fierce winds, uprooting trees and houses, ripping roofs off buildings and causing widespread power and water cuts, while most casualties were due to falling trees.
Due to heavy rains, thousands of people were evacuated or sought shelter before the typhoon hit the country’s coast from the Bay of Bengal on Monday.
Hazard signal No. 7 was issued in maximum parts of Bangladesh and major ports, while fishing boats, trawlers and marine vessels over the North Bay were asked to remain protected until further warning.
Flooding and cyclone devastation
Several parts of the country were reportedly flooded and many delicate homes were absolutely damaged or damaged. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, has also faced congestion caused by continuous rains. elsewhere in the capital, adding Mohammadpur, Azimpur, Badda, Demra, Jatrabari and Jurain remains a problem. The cyclone also caused extensive damage in the coastal areas of Bhola, Khulna, Chittagong and other districts.
Deaths reported in districts
According to the IANS report, at least four other people died in the southern district of Bhola, where fallen trees blocked roads and electrical power materials were not fully restored.
A man, his wife and young daughter were killed Monday when a tree fell on their home in the eastern district of Cumilla, a local official said Tuesday. The remaining deaths were reported in other parts of the country, including the capital, Dhaka.
