The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services has not been able to do so. U. S. (HHS) announced that it will join the CVS and Walgreens pharmacy chains to deliver and administer coronavirus vaccines, once approved, to others living and operating in long-term, on-site, and at no refundable care centers.

“At the beginning of the COVID-19 vaccination program, the source of vaccines would possibly be limited. And our efforts to make plans will need to focus on those at peak risk of developing a serious COVID-19 disease, as well as those that are essential for direct patient care,” Jay Butler, Assistant Director of Infectious Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said in a call with reporters on October 16. As a component of the new federal initiative, called the Pharmaceutical Association for the Long Term Care Program, CVS and Walgreens will work directly with amenities to schedule and coordinate clinic dates on site. “We are doing everything we can to ease the logistical burden of administering a vaccine,” he added.

The program is not mandatory: both a long-term care center will have to register and decide the spouse’s pharmacy they prefer to have in place. “But it will be anything that can be obtained for both nursing homes and the elderly living in the middle of the country,” said Paul Mango, HHS’s deputy director of policy staff.

No coronavirus vaccine has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but some are the last four candidate vaccines found in phase 3 clinical trials in the United States. When evaluated, some experts expect the tests to produce protective and effective effects before the end of this year or early next year.
Nursing homes can sign up for the new program through the National Health Care Safety Network, HHS said, and assisted living centers can point to an online survey they will receive.
