Crowd in Il Lombardia due to the dangers of COVID-19

On Saturday, Il Lombardia will run with a limited number of crowds along the route, and the government will forbid spectators from meeting at the end in Como and on the main ascents of Colle del Ghisallo and Muro di Sormano.

According to a report by the local newspaper Corriere di Como, the local prefecture declared the domain of arrival “for the crowds to gather to see the arrival and rite of the podium. There won’t be a big screen to show the race either.

The main climbs of Colle del Ghisallo and Muro di Sormano in the last 60 kilometers of the race will also be cordoned off, and the police will prevent the crowds from accumulating on the climb.

Crowds are limited through the COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected Italy’s Lombardy region. There were approximately 100,000 cases shown and 16,000 deaths after Lombardy was one of the first regions affected by the COVID1-9 virus. Il Lombardia deserves not to forget those affected by the pandemic with a minute’s silence before departure in Bergamo on Saturday.

For reasons, next week’s VOO-Tour of Wallonia will not reveal the stages of the race to deter crowds and organizers have begged the public to watch the race on television.

Originally located in the first week of October and historically closes the wonderful European racing schedule, Il Lombardia moved to August 15 of this year as a component of the large reprogramming of occasions due to the coronavirus pandemic. The date is a national holiday in Italy, Ferragosto, with how to be occupied by tourists.

RCS Sport organizers announced a overdue replacement, of course, before this week, cutting 12 km from the 243 km course to 231 km and making it the shortest edition of the race since 1960.

The substitution has no effect on the selective characteristics of the route: the emblematic climb of the Madonna del Ghisallo, the steep Muro di Sormano and the ascents of Civiglio and San Fermo della Battaglia in the last 20 kilometers. The race ends on the seafront of Como with a quick filming of five km from the last climb.

Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-QuickStep) will make his debut at Il Lombardia as a favourite after winning Poland’s overall tour, his fourth-tier victory of the season.

Mathieu van der Poel, whose Alpecin-Fenix team has been invited to all RCS Sport’s one-day races, will also be on the line for the first time. Last year’s winner, Bauke Mollema, and his Trek-Segafredo teammate and two-time Il Lombardia champion Vincenzo Nibali will be back.
