A “critical” meeting will be held on Thursday to discuss the long-term Grangemouth oil refinery, with ministers from the Scottish and UK governments taking part.

The forum, which will be held online, will also feature the President of Falkirk City Council, trade union representatives and homeowners from Petroineos.

Last year, the closure of a refinery and an oil import terminal was announced, raising fears that many jobs would be lost.

Petroineos said the refinery is “very inefficient” and continues to run at a loss.

However, it will operate until at least the spring of 2025 and other parts of the Grangemouth complex, such as the 1940s-era pipeline carrying oil and fuel from the North Sea, will continue to operate.

The Scottish Government’s Energy Secretary, Neil Gray, will chair the meeting, which will “focus on achieving a transition for Grangemouth”.

Gray said: “We can work together to ensure a positive future for the site, for the workforce and for the Scottish economy.

“The Scottish Government is committed to ensuring a just transition for Grangemouth.

“The long-term refinery will play a role in this and we recognize that we can’t do it alone.

“That is why I am convening this assembly today.

“This requires the members of this new forum to play a role, interact constructively and collaborate to ensure that our shared interests and ambitions are achieved. »

UK Government Minister for Scotland John Lamont said: “This is a challenging time for those facing uncertainty, as well as their families and communities around the refinery.

“The repurposing of the Grangemouth Future Industry Board is an opportunity for the UK and Scottish governments to come together with representatives from Petroineos and the region as we seek assurances on how workers are supported and explore how the future of the site will continue to give a contribution to the local economy.

The UK’s Minister of State for Climate, Graham Stuart, is also taking part in the meeting.
