MANILA, Philippines – Quezón City has installed its own molecular laboratory capable of treating coronavirus disease tests (COVID-19), with the aim of opening it in the last week of August once approved through the Ministry of Health.
QC Mayor Joy Belmonte said the lab is also an “investment” because it treats not only COVID-19 samples, but also other medical tests such as tuberculosis, human immunodeficiency virus, dengue, among others.
In addition to the lab itself, the three-story construction will have its own knowledge coding mastery and bedrooms assigned to the facility.
The laboratory will be manned by 20 members of the City Health Department to include medical technologists, pathologists, a laboratory manager, and other manpower support who will undergo training for the highly technical requirements of the laboratory at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).
“There were demanding situations in the hiring of fitness workers, in obtaining the mandatory equipment, especially now when there is a high demand for machines, and also in the location of which most productive suits all protocols and requirements,” said QC CoVID-19 Chief of Force. Joseph Juico said in a statement.
With the new laboratory, Juico said the city government will lessen its expenses as it will no longer be paying private hospitals and laboratories for the tests.
