Scientists at Boston University were criticized this week for an experiment in which they played with the COVID-19 virus. Breathless headlines claimed they had created a deadly new strain, and the National Institutes of Health chided the university for not having government permission.
It turned out that the experiments, conducted on mice, were not what the media’s incendiary policy suggested. The manipulated virus strain was less lethal than the original.
