Aug. 21, 2023: COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths are surging in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.
There have been another 10,320 people hospitalized for COVID-related reasons over the past week, a 14. 3% increase from last week, the CDC said Friday in its weekly update. Hospitalizations have increased for six consecutive weeks.
The University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) noted that more counties have moved to the average point of COVID admissions, especially in the South and Southeast. One county is indexed as having the highest admissions, Grant County, Oregon.
There have been 6. 2 million COVID-related hospitalizations since January 1, 2020.
Bernard Camins, MD, medical director of infections at Mount Sinai Health System, told CBS News that COVID cases have increased this summer because other people are socializing more.
“I expect the numbers to decrease a little bit more because there has been a lot of activity,” he said.
COVID-related deaths were up 8. 3% last week from last week, the CDC said. This is the second week in a row that deaths have increased. The CDC said 1. 3% of last week’s deaths were caused by COVID.
Since January 1, 2020, 1. 1 million people in the United States have died from COVID.
CIDRAP noted that early signs of COVID have also been higher. Emergency room visits are up 19% from last week, with increases in the South and Southeast, as well as Oregon. Test positivity rose as much as 1. 5% from last week to last week.
The CDC also updated its variation ratios on Friday. Updates show that EG. 5 remains the top strain, rising from 16. 1% to 20. 6% of all COVID cases in the U. S. The U. S. has been in the U. S. for the past two weeks.
