Covid cases in Russia skyrocket as death toll tops 900

The death toll from Covid-19 has surpassed 900 for a day in a row, with 924 new deaths reported, a day after hitting a record 929.

Russia already has Europe’s death toll in the pandemic, surpassing 213,000, and the authorities’ conservative way of recording covid-19 deaths suggests the real number may be even higher.

On Thursday, the government’s coronavirus task force reported 27,550 new cases, a cumulative of nearly 10% from the previous day. New infections in Moscow rose nearly 50% to 5,404.

An immediate surge in infections and deaths began in late September, and the government blamed it for low vaccination rates.

As of Tuesday, nearly 33 percent of Russia’s other 146 million people had received at least one coronavirus vaccine, and 29 percent were fully vaccinated.

But the Kremlin has ignored the concept of enforcing a new nationwide blockade, delegating force to tighten restrictions to regional authorities.

Some regions have limited participation in large public events and are limited to theaters, restaurants and other venues to others who have been vaccinated, recently recovered from Covid-19 or tested negative in the last 72 hours.

In some regions, Russia’s vast but severely insufficient fitness formula has begun to show signs of having been defeated by the epidemic.

Russian media reported that long lines of ambulances formed outdoors at St. Petersburg hospitals.

And on Tuesday, the presidential envoy to the Ural Mountains district, a district in central Russia spanning six regions, said 95% of hospital beds for covid-19 patients had been filled there.

Overall, Russia’s coronavirus task force has recorded nearly 7. 7 million confirmed cases and 213,549 deaths.

However, reports by Russia’s state statistical service Rosstat retroactively counting coronavirus-related deaths reveal particularly high mortality figures.
