A wonderful general doctor warns that reporting on Covid-19 figures is an “emotional roller coaster” for other people and generates great anxiety.
Dr Maitiu O’Tuathail says it would be much more if they were published weekly in a broader context.
Yesterday, 98 cases of Covid-19 were reported as new deaths.
El Dr. O’Tuathail says the daily publication of case figures has a significant effect on people:
“We had 50 instances on Sunday, 217 instances on Monday and 80 instances the next day. It’s this emotional roller coaster, so when the instances are high, other people are scared and worried and when they’re low, it falsely reassures other people.
“Because we report cases in the form of a real context of numbers, they probably don’t make sense.”
To date in Ireland, there have been 29,303 deaths from Covid-19 and 1,777 deaths from the virus.
Lately there are 48 other people in the hospital with cases of Covid-19 and seven others treated in the ICU.
This is because doctors survived most patients treated in extensive care sets for Covid-19.
The overall national survival rate of the virus in the ICU is about 83%, some others have been very sick.
Doctors share what they learned about treating critical patients at a webinar today.
The president of the College of Anesthesiologists of Ireland, Dr Brian Kinirons, says they are getting younger and younger:
“To date, we have seven patients in the country’s extensive care sets with Covid-19 nationwide. As a result, this cohort is possibly younger.
“This may reflect the fact that this cohort has fewer other diseases than older patients. As a result, the need for hospitalization is lower and so is extensive care.”
