COVID-19 virus is transmitted from food to humans – FDA

Coronavirus is transmitted from food to humans, according to the local Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In a letter to the Philippine Meat Processors Association, Inc. (PAMPI) dated September 11, FDA CEO Rolando Enrique D. Domingo stated that there is no evidence that severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 coronavirus, the culprit strain of COVID-19, can be transmitted to humans through food, food ingredients or packaging materials.

“Following the Scientific Declaration of the World Health Organization (WHO), the FDA would like to reaffirm that lately there is no evidence of the transmission of the COVID-19 virus from food or food ingredients,” Dominingo said in the letter.

PAMPI President Felix O. Tiukinhoy Jr. said the organization requested knowledge after Agriculture Secretary William D. Dar, issue an ordinance prohibiting imports of Brazilian meat from entering the country. – Revin D. Ochave
