COVID-19 vaccine opens at hardest-hit Chelsea

On Thursday, the City of Chelsea is expected to open its own coronavirus vaccination center at the headquarters of the Chelsea Collaborative.

The East Boston Community Health Center will operate the new vaccination site. Appointments can be made online and by phone starting Tuesday morning. The center will first limit access to only Chelsea citizens, starting with those over the age of 75.

The center’s location is in the newly rebuilt headquarters of the Chelsea Collaborative, a nonprofit network organization at 318 Broadway in Chelsea.

According to Gladys Vega, executive director of Collaborative, the main workplace was in desperate need of maintenance after the organization turned its workplaces into a pantry in the spring. She says a union of painters and carpenters in the city updated the pro bono space.

“At the height of the pandemic, we fed our network,” Vega said. “And then, almost a year later, we’re giving away the vaccines so that we start to see the end of this pandemic. In this way, we can begin to have a general life and the members of our network can heal. “

Vega said she and the Collaborative have been strongly defending a vaccination center in Chelsea, where about 80 percent of citizens are service workers.

We hear from Dr. Richard Ellison, infectious disease specialist at UMass Memorial Health Care, about coronavirus variants that are making headlines and what they mean for vaccines that are on the market lately.
