COVID-19 vaccine may not be mandatory in the U.S., Says Fauci

“There is no need to demand and verify to force a vaccine. We’ve never done that,” Fauci, a member of the White House Coronavirus Working Group, said at a video convention hosted by George Washington University.

“It may require certain teams from other people such as fitness staff, but for the general population, they cannot,” he added, bringing the example of the National Institutes of Health, where fitness staff treat patients without a flu vaccine.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced hours before coronavirus vaccines, once approved, would be mandatory for everyone in his country for medical exemptions.

But the U.S. government’s decentralized formula and decades-old anti-vaccine sentiments had made an immunization program unlikely.

“It would be unworkable and inappropriate,” Fauci said.

However, this does not prevent states from demanding a vaccine for young people in school, as is already the case with certain diseases such as measles, some are exempt for medical or devout reasons.
