“This is a critical moment for Nigeria’s children. We can either seize it – or condemn millions of children to preventable illness or even death,” the statement said.
The statement quoted Dr Faisal Shuaib, Executive Director of Nigeria’s National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA),as say:“We are in a strong position here in Nigeria – we have a full stock of routine immunization vaccines and can use the strong community outreach programmes across the country, not only to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but to also ensure children receive vaccinations for diseases we can easily prevent.We must seize this moment to be creative and act wisely.”
“What is at stake is the critical progress made in recent decades to ensure that more young people and adolescents have a wider diversity of vaccines, adding in Nigeria. Despite this progress, however, Nigeria still accounts for 30% of the world’s vaccinated people. 0 to 5 years old.
“We have a long way to go to ensure greater coverage for young people in the disease, and vaccination rates, which add to the highly contagious and deadly measles virus, are in danger of disappearing,” Hawkins said. “Let us seize this moment to reinvent the way we manage immunization to young people, leveraging existing network structures for COVID-19 prevention, also immunization rates, and ensuring a longer and healthier career for young Nigerians.”
He noted: “The overall immunization policy rate with the third dose of the diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough (DTC3) vaccine has stagnated by 85% since 2010. In Nigeria, the figures show that vaccines from the regimen in the first 6 months of 2020 decreased to the regime in 2019, indicating a significant deterioration in the regime’s immunization policy due to COVID-19.
“No Nigerian child dies from a preventable disease that can be prevented without problems with an affordable and easily accessible vaccine within our borders. Let’s not let COVID-19 distract us from the paintings we still want to make to make sure that all Nigerian young people get their full-regime vaccine,” Peter Hawkins said.
UNICEF also regretted that “due to the COVID-19 pandemic, at least 30 international measles vaccination campaigns have been or are at risk of being cancelled, which can lead to additional outbreaks in 2020 and beyond.”
“We already knew that the challenge of vaccinating each and every child was overwhelming, and now we know that COVID-19 has made the difficult scenario even worse,” said UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore.
“We want to prevent further deterioration in immunization policy and immunization facilities before children’s lives are threatened by other outbreaks. We can’t change one fitness crisis for another,” Fore added.
He said: “Given the stagnation of global policy levels, the likelihood that a born child today will be fully vaccinated with all vaccines in the world up to the age of five is less than 20%.”
“Research shows that as of 2019, only about 14 million young people have not won any of the major vaccines, such as measles, diphtheria, tetanus or whooping cough. Two-thirds of these young people are concentrated in ten countries: Nigeria, India, the Democrats Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, the Philippines, Ethiopia, Brazil, Indonesia, Angola and Mexico,” he said.

“We want to reinvent vaccination in Nigeria and rebuild better, despite the pandemic,” Hawkins said.
“We can do this by strengthening the confidence of caregivers in access to immunization. Array contacting others to make sure they perceive the importance of these vaccines to their children’s lives and physical protective personnel so they can safely and effectively deliver them.”
